A dental emergency includes any oral health issue that requires immediate attention to alleviate severe pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth. Common dental emergencies include severe toothaches, knocked-out teeth, broken or cracked teeth, abscesses or infections, and lost fillings or crowns.
If you're experiencing a severe toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water and gently use dental floss to remove any food caught between your teeth. Avoid putting aspirin directly on your gums as this can burn the tissue. Contact Santa Monica Esthetic Dentistry immediately to schedule an emergency appointment.
For a knocked-out tooth, time is critical. Retrieve the tooth by the crown (top part), avoid touching the root, and rinse it with water if it's dirty. Try to reinsert it into the socket. If that’s not possible, place the tooth in a small container of milk or a cup of water with a pinch of salt. Call us immediately, as getting to a dentist within an hour can increase the chance of saving the tooth.
If your child knocks out a baby tooth, do not attempt to reinsert it as this could harm the developing permanent tooth. Instead, contact us right away for advice and to determine if an emergency appointment is necessary.
Yes, Santa Monica Esthetic Dentistry is equipped to handle a wide range of dental emergencies. From toothaches and abscesses to broken teeth and lost restorations, we provide comprehensive emergency dental care tailored to your needs.
During an emergency visit, our primary goal is to alleviate pain and address the immediate issue. We'll conduct a thorough examination, possibly including X-rays, to determine the extent of the problem. Then, we'll discuss the best course of action with you, which may involve providing temporary relief until a more permanent treatment can be performed.
While not all dental emergencies can be prevented, you can significantly reduce your risk by maintaining good oral hygiene, wearing a mouthguard during sports, and avoiding using your teeth to open things or chew hard objects. Regular dental check-ups can also help identify and treat issues before they become emergencies.
Many dental insurance plans offer coverage for emergency services, but coverage can vary. We recommend checking with your insurance provider to understand your coverage. Our staff can assist with insurance questions and help ensure you get the maximum benefits available to you.
